New Spanish-Language Consumer Brochure for Adults in the Criminal Justice System (4/21/08)
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) announces the availability of the Spanish-language version of Alcohol and Drug Treatment: How It Works, And How It Can Help You (El Tratamiento para el Abuso de las Drogas y el Alcohol: Cómo, Funciona y Cómo Puede Ayudarle). This brochure is based on Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 44: Substance Abuse Treatment for Adults in the Criminal Justice System, and informs people involved in the criminal justice system about substance abuse treatment resources in prison and in the community. It describes what a person can gain through substance abuse treatment before trial or while incarcerated, on probation, or on parole. It encourages people to seek help for substance use disorders and tells them where to find help.

Now Available - FASD: Curriculum for Addiction Professionals: Level 2
The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Curriculum for Addiction Professionals: Level 2 (CAP 2), is the product of a joint effort of the SAMHSA Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Center for Excellence and the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS). This curriculum aims to help addictions-focused professionals prevent, recognize, and address FASD. It provides training for social workers, certified addiction counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and others in the treatment and recovery field. This curriculum has been designed for professionals who work with men, women, and adolescents in treatment, though some of the competencies (e.g., Prevention) focus on issues specific to women.

SAMHSA Announces Availability of Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders Inservice Training
Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders Inservice Training is based on Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 42, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons With Co-Occurring Disorders. Published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, TIPs are best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders.
This manual provides a structure for introducing addiction counselors and other practitioners to information on the rapidly advancing field of co-occurring substance use and mental disorders provided in TIP 42. The material is designed for delivery by clinical supervisors. Participants in the training will become familiar with the evidence-based knowledge presented in TIP 42, thereby enabling them to apply approaches to treating people with co-occurring substance use and mental disorders.
The trainer’s manual includes eighteen 45-minute modules to be delivered over time, with one module presented per training session. Each module corresponds to the chapter of the same number in TIP 42 and includes presentation instructions, PowerPoint slides (that can be copied onto overhead transparencies), trainer scripts, and participant handouts. The training approach includes presentation, discussion, group or partnered practice exercises, and between-session assignments to enhance participants’ learning.

SAMHSA Announces Availability of
Enhancing Motivation for Change In-service Training Curriculum
The Enhancing Motivation for Change In-service Training manual is based on Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 35, Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Abuse Treatment. Provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, TIPs are best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders.
This manual includes materials for substance abuse treatment supervisors to provide in-service staff training for clinicians and other treatment professionals. This in-service training is particularly useful for new counselors or for clinicians who are unfamiliar with the basic concepts of motivational enhancement. Participants will learn about change theory and motivational strategies, learn to assess clients’ readiness for change, and develop skills for enhancing client motivation. Between-session exercises help participants practice new skills and integrate learning into their practices.
The trainer’s manual includes eleven 1½- to 2-hour modules and can be delivered on consecutive days or can be offered over several weeks. Each module includes presentation instructions, PowerPoint slides (that can be copied onto overhead transparencies), homework assignments, and participant handouts. The training approach includes presentation, discussion, group or partnered practice exercises, and between-session assignments to enhance participants’ learning.
