SAMHSA Announces Availability of New Multi-Language Initiative Products: Navajo-Language Products Addressing the Dangers of Inhalant Use and Russian-Language Products Addressing Substance Abuse Issues for Women and Families
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announces the availability of six new Multi-Language Initiative products targeting Navajo-language and Russian-language audiences.
Four Navajo-language brochures address the dangers of inhalant use: Tips for Teens, Mind Over Matter: The Brain’s Response to Inhalants, Inhalant Abuse: Your Child at Risk!, and A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Inhalant Abuse. The brochures were adapted into Navajo from English-language versions. The products provide information about why young people use inhalants, the symptoms of use, the damage inhalant use does to the brain and body, and how to prevent inhalant use. Some products include lists of resources and where to go for help.
Two new Russian-language booklets address substance abuse issues. What Is Substance Abuse Treatment? A Booklet for Families uses a questions-and-answer format to provide basic information about substance abuse treatment and early recovery, what to expect when a family member or friend enters treatment, and what happens in the early stages of treatment. Helping Yourself Heal: A Recovering Woman’s Guide to Coping With Childhood Abuse Issues helps women who are entering treatment understand some of the feelings that can surface about the abuse they experienced as a child. The guide defines childhood abuse, describes the symptoms of abuse, and suggests ways to handle childhood abuse issues while in treatment.
These products are part of the Multi-Language Initiative library that is available online through the Knowledge Application Program Web site at www.kap.samhsa.gov . These products may be downloaded and printed for distribution to clients and family members who read Navajo or Russian. The library also includes products available in Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese. |
